1. Choose the purpose, surface and impression size
Decide whether your stamp is for tags, correspondence, journal pages, cards or business branding. Measure the available space. Stamp sizes describe the impression size, so compare the design with the space where the ink will appear.
Standard self-inking ink is intended for absorbent paper and card. Glossy, coated, plastic, fabric and uneven surfaces need separate suitability advice. Tell us the material before ordering if your project goes beyond ordinary paper stationery.
A compact square design may suit the 25 × 25mm Trodat 4933. A circular badge or motif may suit the 42mm round Trodat 4642. Check the logo-stamp buying guide for wider layouts and other choices.
2. Prepare your drawing or digital design
You can begin with a clear hand-drawn design or an existing digital file. For a drawing, use a clean background and capture the design sharply with even lighting. Avoid shadows, folds and blur that obscure the edges. For digital artwork, keep your original editable file so you can adjust the design if needed.
Choose a single clear idea rather than combining several small illustrations and long lines of text. If your design includes lettering, check that it remains legible at the intended impression size.
3. Simplify details and check readability
View or print the design at the intended size. A tagline that reads well when enlarged on a screen can become difficult to read on a small stamp. Simplify fine textures, tiny lettering and crowded elements. Leave visible space between letters and shapes.

A standard single-colour stamp prints the design in the ink colour you select. It does not reproduce the different colours of an uploaded illustration automatically. Extra pads in a package are replacement pads, rather than a multicolour printing system.
4. Save an upload-ready file
Upload SVG, PNG or JPG/JPEG artwork in the online personaliser and check the preview before ordering. PDF upload is not currently supported in the online personaliser. If you only have a PDF, contact us before ordering.
Use a clear original file rather than a small screenshot. Changing a filename extension does not convert a file into another format. Keep a copy of the original artwork and check that the uploaded visual shows the design you intended.
5. Review the visual and request help if needed
The personaliser shows a visual of your design. Check spelling, names, dates, proportions and the selected options. A separate proof is available on request. You are not required to carve a sample stamp or produce a physical test impression before ordering.

Common artwork questions
Can I use a hand-drawn design?
You can prepare a clear digital image of your drawing for upload. Check sharpness, contrast and readability at the intended impression size, and ask for help if the original includes fine detail.
Do I need carving tools?
No. This guide covers preparing artwork to order a personalised stamp. Making a stamp by hand is a separate craft process.
Will a coloured logo print in all its original colours?
A standard single-colour stamp prints in the selected ink colour. Review a simple version of the design that will remain recognisable in one colour.
Can I upload a PDF?
PDF upload is not currently supported in the online personaliser. Contact us before ordering if your artwork is only available as a PDF.
